Biosecurityis of paramount importance to prevent the introduction and spread of pathogensand to preserve the health of farmed animals. Healthier animals result inbetter animal welfare, greater sustainability of animal production systems, andreduced use of antimicrobials. While there is a consensus that biosecurity isimportant, there is still a lack of commitment and consistency in theimplementation of additional/reinforced measures.
This project will provide policy makers and educators with a deeper understanding of the knowledge gaps and psycho-social-and demographic factors that must be considered in the development and delivery of outreach and education. This can help to improve compliance with biosecurity measures among poultry owners in the United States of America.
The project covered the 3 following objectives:
- Conduct a stakeholder mapping and analysis of biosecurity plans. (IIAD lead)
- Investigate and identify factors influencing the implementation of biosecurity measures (SAFOSO lead)
- Promote best practices for innovative evidence-based communication and dissemination strategies and policy discussion. (IIAD lead)
First, SAFOSO assisted with stakeholder mapping and analyzed surveys using social network analysis.
Second, SAFOSO supported the identification ofpsychological, social and demographic factors that influence the implementation of biosecurity standards. The results of this work were subsequently published: Link
