As a result of the large scale outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 in Indonesia, there was a great need to rapidly build up national capacity in epidemiology, surveillance and diagnostics. SAFOSO contributed to two workshops on AI epidemiology in Medan (Sumatra) and Denpasar (Bali). The workshops combined lectures, group work and field visits to facilitate translation of theoretical concepts into practical use.
