Foodborne pathogens continue to pose significant public health challenges and require continuous monitoring, assessment, and evaluation. Effective food safety management depends on access to up-to-date scientific evidence and robust risk assessment methodologies. To support its mandate in protecting public health, the Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office (FSVO) commissions scientific analyses and risk assessments that contribute to evidence-based policy development and risk management.
Under a framework contract, we provide scientific and technical support for a range of food safety risk assessment activities. Our work includes conducting comprehensive literature reviews, compiling and evaluating scientific evidence, and developing pathogen-specific risk profiles that summarize key information on epidemiology, transmission routes, occurrence in food, and available control measures.
In addition, we conduct qualitative and quantitative microbiological risk assessments to address a broad range of food safety questions. Depending on the scope of the project and the available data, this may include hazard characterization, exposure assessment, risk characterization, the evaluation of potential risk mitigation measures, and the development of quantitative models to assess risks and compare different scenarios. We also monitor and synthesize emerging scientific findings relevant to foodborne hazards, ensuring that assessments are based on the latest available evidence.
The work combines expertise in epidemiology, microbiology, food safety risk assessment, and scientific evidence synthesis to support informed decision-making within the Swiss food safety system.
