In Switzerland, food and consumer products are tested and inspected according to internationallyrecognized methods to assess risks. An education program for cantonalinspectors is offered to ensure the availability of highly skilled inspectors andto promote harmonized implementation of inspections across the country. In 2020,the courses, including their responsibility, coordination, organization andstructure of the curriculum, were reorganized and aligned with similar trainingcourses for official veterinarians. After three years of implementation of therevised program, the Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office (FSVO) wanted toconduct an evaluation to identify any potential areas for further improvement.
The work for the evaluation included thecollection of information from different stakeholders, including among otherstrainees, trainers and heads of cantonal competent authorities, through interviews, online surveys and a workshop. As a next step, the data were analyzed andconsolidated in a report. Based on the results, recommendations were developed.
The results of the evaluation indicated a largely high level ofsatisfaction with the revised education program among all stakeholders, butalso identified a few areas where further refinements were needed. Ourrecommendations act as a basis for continued discussions between the FSVO andthe cantonal authorities on the revision of the organization of the educationprogram.
