In light of its accession to WTO, Viet Nam needed to strengthen its understanding and implementation of the rules and procedures for risk analysis in order to comply, among others, with its obligations under the SPS agreement. SAFOSO contributed to an EU-funded project that aimed to help Vietnamese SPS authorities in establishing a framework for risk analysis and strengthening their skills in conducting risk assessment. Working closely together with a phytosanitary expert, SAFOSO prepared a proposal for the establishment of transparent and science-based procedures and processes for risk assessment for plant health, animal health and human health and for the establishment of a risk management and risk communication system among the relevant bodies.
