Animal welfare at slaughter
The European Commission wanted to gather examples of best practices across EU member states for the protection of animals at the time of killing at the slaughterhouse or on the farm. SAFOSO contributed to a project compiling these examples.
Project background
EU Regulation 1099/2009 lays down the principles for the protection of animals at the time of killing. The European Commission wanted to gather examples of best practices across EU member states for the implementation of these principles.
Our work
SAFOSO contributed to a project led by ICFI on behalf of the European Commission which assessed best practices to protect animals at the time of killing. The focus of the review was on the best practices for the layout, construction and equipment of the killing facilities, handling and restraining of animals, stunning methods, monitoring procedures and standard operating procedures for different animal species. Examples of best practices from different EU member states were collected and analyzed and compiled into a single report that will be used by the client.
