Oruro is a region of Bolivia located in the plateau of the Andes. This very poor region relies on the production of lamas for meat and income generation. In order to sell products from these animals on the international market, the freedom from foot and mouth disease (FMD) in this area must be (scientifically) proven. SAFOSO supported Bolivian officials with the preparation of a report which was sent to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and based on which the region was approved as FMD free with vaccination in August 2005. Demonstrating freedom from FMD was only one first step in an on-going programme. Subsequently, SAFOSO held a training course on epidemiology and the control of FMD applying the “train the trainers” approach in Oruro in April 2006.
