Hepatitis E is increasingly recognized as a foodborne zoonotic disease transmitted via pork products. SAFOSO in collaboration with the University of Zurich conducted a quantitative assessment of the risk of hepatitis E to consumers from the consumption of domestic pork and wild boar products. In addition, the objective was to assess the burden of disease of human hepatitis E in Switzerland. The results of the study triggered discussions about the need to make hepatitis E in humans a notifiable disease and to include hepatitis E virus in the national monitoring program for pork products. The results of the study have also been published internationally and can be found on our website [https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27919006].
