What maps reveal - Spatial epidemiology analysis training in Ukraine

06 April 2020

Emerging diseases and epidemics are a constant threat for humans and animals. Spatial analysis is a powerful tool for increasing our ability to investigate epidemiological patterns of these diseases and contribute to the development of more effective disease control plans.

SAFOSO’s Marco De Nardi (Science Manager) is an expert in Spatial Epidemiological Analysis. As part of SAFOSO’s capacity-building service, he supports clients worldwide to gain the skills needed to use spatial analysis tools and methods.

Recently, he led a three-day training on Spatial Epidemiological Analysis in Ukraine, in collaboration with the US consultancy company Metabiota. The training was part of a research project aimed at investigating factors influencing the spread of African swine fever (ASF) in the Ukraine.

Trainees were professionals from the National Veterinary Authority and National University of Life and Environmental Sciences (NULES) of Ukraine. They attended lectures and practical sessions on different methods of spatial and temporal analysis - from simple visualization of disease cases to more advanced methods like extraction mapping, spatial correlation and cluster identification. In all hands-on practical sessions, freely available software was used and trainees were provided with clear instructions for their exercises.

The training was well received by the attendees. Trainees have received the basic skills that will spur further development and utilization of spatial analysis and GIS in epidemiologic research in the Ukraine.
