Sabine Hutter, DVM MSc
Sabine Hutter graduated from veterinary school in Vienna, Austria. She gained her first working experience as a veterinary surgeon in Costa Rica and the United Kingdom.
She complemented her education with a master's degree in Veterinary Epidemiology at the Royal Veterinary College and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in London. Subsequently she moved to Switzerland, completing an internship in epidemiology at the Swiss Federal Veterinary Office in Bern.
Sabine joined SAFOSO in the beginning of 2005. Two of her main projects were BSE (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy) risk assessments in collaboration with the Animal Health Services in two South American countries, but she also participated in projects on Foot and Mouth Disease, Avian Influenza and Newcastle Disease. Keeping faithful to the subject of BSE, she graduated from the University of Bern with the doctoral thesis: "Assessing the Risk of Exposure to Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy in Country X”.
Sabine is an accredited PVS (Performance of Veterinary Services) expert of OIE (World Organization for Animal Health), and has participated in the evaluation of the Veterinary Services of two African and one Central American country, as well as peer-reviewed several mission reports.
For personal reasons Sabine left Switzerland in 2007. She is now working at SENASA, the Costa Rican Veterinary Services, where she is involved in epidemiological surveillance and quality management. However, she will still be available for future projects with SAFOSO.
