Andrea Meisser
Dr. med. vet., MPH
Andrea graduated as a veterinarian from the Veterinary Faculty, Zurich University, in 1978. He then worked at the Institute of Parasitology of the Zurich Vet School and in several rural practices before establishing his own practice for farm and companion animals in Davos, Switzerland.
In 1993, he became a member of the Davos City Council, a position in which he was re-elected every four years until the official end of the term in 2008. In his role as Minister of Health, Transport and Energy, Andrea was Chairman of the Board of the regional hospital, a home for the elderly, the public transport system, the communal waste management, and the regional electric company as well as member of the urban planning committee, to list a few examples. Andrea also contributed to the constitution of a new unit “Clinical Investigation and Documentation” at the AO-Trauma Research and Development Centre in Davos, Switzerland, and was president of the Swiss Veterinary Association GST (1997 to 2004). He was board member of the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe FVE as well as councillor for Western Europe for the World Veterinary Association WVA. To integrate and update his broad knowledge and experience in the fields of animal and human health, Andrea obtained the Master of Advanced Studies in Public Health, MPH of the Universities of Basel, Bern and Zurich, Switzerland (2009-2011).
As a member of the Human and Animal Health research group of the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute Basel, Switzerland, his main interests lie in the One Health approach to add more value to the health of humans, animals and the ecosystem. He is responsible for the project “One Health: The potential of closer cooperation between human and animal health in Switzerland” of the National Centre of Competence in Research, NCCR North-South, Partnership Action Programme PAMS, Bern, Switzerland.
Andrea is a generalist with 30 years of professional experience as practitioner, researcher, president and board member in communal politics and of professional associations in the field of veterinary medicine. He has developed an extensive personal network with key persons in the field of human and animal health; high level negotiation and mediation skills; extensive experience in strategic thinking; and extensive budgeting and financial management expertise.
